Dispensary Support Learnerships Job Description
Dis-Chem Pharmacies is looking for motivated learners to join their team as Dispensary Support. The primary goal of this learnership is to prepare learners to complete the basic pharmacist assistant course. This course covers fundamental principles in the pharmaceutical environment and promotes quality on-the-job learning. Learners will be employed in a fixed-term position until they register with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) as learner basic assistants. Once qualified, they may be considered for permanent employment.
Minimum Requirements
Essential Qualifications
- Education: Grade 12 – Matric or Senior Certificate with Pure Mathematics (minimum 50%), Life Science, or Physical Science (minimum 50% average)
Responsibilities
- Completion of a proficiency test to apply for registration with SAPC as a learner basic assistant
- Under the supervision of a pharmacist, learners may:
- Sell Schedule 1 medicines or substances
- Assist in the preparation of non-sterile medicines or substances according to approved formulas and Standard Operating Procedures
- Unpack, merchandise stock, and clean dispensary and OTC shelves
- Perform additional duties assigned by the Dispensary Manager
- Interpret scripts accurately, ensuring legal compliance
- Pick, pack, label, and check medication accurately
- Control stock, manage cleanliness, and monitor expiry dates of Schedule 1 to Schedule 5 medicines
- Follow up with patients regarding script tracking reports and appointments
- Manage call center scripts and patient service telephone calls
- Provide health promotion information
- Assist with scheme authorization of chronic, HIV and AIDS, and oncology medication
- Report stock discrepancies and low levels to the dispensary manager
- Receive dispensary stock according to SOPs

Advantageous Skills
- Retail FMCG experience, particularly in Dis-Chem’s front shop
- Knowledge of drugs, family planning, and complementary medicine
- Experience with Unisolv, SAP, and E-Scripting
Special Conditions of Employment
- Must pass a proficiency test to register with the Pharmacy Council
- Must be a South African citizen
- Must have clear criminal and credit records (MIE)
