AFGRI Apprenticeship Program Opportunity Overview:

  • Work Level: Student/Graduate
  • Job Type: Contract

  • Employment Equity: Positions will align with AFGRI’s Employment Equity Policy.
  • Duration: 3 years of in-service training.
  • Qualification: Tractor or Earthmoving Mechanic.
  • Initial Phase: 6-month probationary period to ensure a mutual fit; either party may withdraw during this time without consequence. After probation, the apprentice will be bound by an AFGRI contract for the remainder of the apprenticeship.
  • Training Components

    • Practical Training Institute (if required).
    • Distance learning for N2 subjects (Mathematics, Engineering Science, Diesel Trade Theory, and one additional subject).
    • Product training at the John Deere Training Facility in Boksburg and other suppliers.
    • Internal training from AFGRI specialists.

Training Costs:

  • No cost for passing training. Failure to pass may result in additional costs and time required to re-take the training.

Contract Terms:

  • Binding Contract: 3 years, with a maximum extension of 4 years if needed.
  • Withdrawal Costs: Should an apprentice withdraw during or after the training period, costs may be incurred based on the time and phase of withdrawal. The apprentice is expected to “work back” the duration of qualification time.
  • Completion Requirement: Qualification must be achieved within 4 years; contracts expire if the apprentice does not qualify within this timeframe.

Duties of the Apprentice:

  • Learn to be a Mechanic/Technician.
  • Repair and maintain related equipment.
  • Manage stock control.
  • Provide customer service.
  • Perform general workplace tasks.

  • Assessment: Candidates may be required to attend an interview and assessment.

Requirements:

  • Driver’s License: Valid and up-to-date.
  • Skills: Strong communication, administrative skills, and computer literacy.
  • Educational Requirements:
    • N2 Subjects: Mathematics, Engineering Science, Diesel Trade Theory, and one additional subject (Industrial Electronics, Engineering/Technical Drawing, or Motor Trade Theory).
    • Alternative Qualification: If N2 is not available, a Matric Certificate with Mathematics (not Literacy), Technical Mathematics, Physical Science, Technical Science, or Engineering Graphics and Design will be considered.
