The South African Police Service (SAPS) Special Task Force (STF) is conducting a recruitment drive to address the high attrition rate within its Division: Visible Policing and Operations. Requirements

To be considered for this prestigious role, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Valid Driver’s License and Firearm Competency: Candidates must possess a valid driver’s license to ensure they can operate vehicles as part of their duties. Additionally, firearm competency is essential, as STF members are expected to handle and operate firearms proficiently.
  • Compliance with National Instruction 18 of 2019 (Integrity Management) Regarding Remunerative Work: Candidates must adhere to the SAPS Integrity Management guidelines, particularly those related to remunerative work outside of their police duties. This ensures that members maintain the highest standards of integrity and ethical conduct.
  • Successful Completion of Fitness and Shooting Evaluations: Physical fitness is crucial for STF members, given the demanding nature of their tasks. Candidates must pass rigorous fitness tests to demonstrate their physical readiness. Similarly, they must excel in shooting evaluations to prove their capability in handling firearms accurately and safely under various conditions.
  • Completion of Refresher or Conversion Courses: Even if candidates have prior STF or equivalent military training, they are required to complete refresher or conversion courses. These courses ensure that all members are up-to-date with the latest techniques, protocols, and operational procedures specific to the STF.
  • Confirmation of Suitability for Appointment: A thorough vetting process is conducted to confirm each candidate’s suitability for the role. This includes background checks, psychological evaluations, and interviews to assess the candidate’s readiness and fit for the STF environment.
  • Medical and Psychological Fitness: Candidates must undergo medical examinations to ensure they are in good health and capable of performing their duties without risk to themselves or others. Psychological fitness is equally important, as the nature of STF operations can be mentally and emotionally demanding.
  • Experience and Training Background: Preference is given to candidates with prior experience in STF or equivalent military units. This includes specialized training in areas such as counter-terrorism, hostage rescue, and tactical response, which are crucial for the operations of the STF.
  • High Ethical Standards: Members of the STF are expected to exhibit the highest ethical standards both on and off duty. This includes honesty, reliability, and a commitment to the values and principles of the SAPS.
  • Teamwork and Leadership Skills: The STF operates as a cohesive unit, and teamwork is essential for success. Candidates must demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively within a team. Leadership experience is also valuable, as STF members may be required to lead and make critical decisions during operations.
  • Commitment to Continuous Training and Improvement: The STF is committed to continuous improvement and excellence. Candidates must be willing to engage in ongoing training and professional development to maintain and enhance their skills and capabilities.

Rank and Employment Offers

Successful candidates will be appointed as  Special Task Force Operators/Members with the rank of Warrant Officer. For those who have previously held the rank of Captain or above, equivalent ranks may be offered, depending on available posts. Additionally, candidates will be required to enter into a five-year contract with the SAPS.

Targeted Recruitment

This recruitment initiative is specifically targeting individuals with existing  Special Task Force or equivalent military training, such as the South African Special Forces (ONLY SF). This ensures that candidates already possess the essential skills and experience needed for the demanding roles within the Special Task Force.

  • Certificate of acceptance of the post/appointment and salary offer.

  • Code of Conduct.
  • WP1002.
  • Nomination of beneficiaries (Death Grant).
  • Proof of registration with the South African Revenue Service (SARS).
  • Fingerprints and AFIS report from LCRC.
  • Certificate from the Commander confirming no pending criminal/departmental cases or convictions.
  • Confirmation of acceptance of duty.

Candidates offered employment will need to undergo a vetting process and submit the required documents. Once appointed, they are expected to start working within two months.

Compensation

A scarce skills allowance is payable to qualifying employees, acknowledging the unique and essential skills they bring to the South African Police Service .
