Professional Nurse Job Description
The City of Johannesburg’s Health Department is looking to recruit professional nurses on short-term contracts (not exceeding 12 months). These roles will focus on immunisation programs, health awareness campaigns, and early detection and management of diseases within various communities.
Job Responsibilities
As a Professional Nurse in this role, your duties will include:
Immunisations & Health Screenings
- Providing school-based immunisations (HPV, Tdap) and deworming of learners
- Conducting health assessments for learners as per guidelines
- Managing early detection and control of diseases
Health Education & Community Engagement
- Organising and participating in health awareness campaigns at clinics and community level
- Engaging with community groups to raise awareness of both communicable and non-communicable diseases
- Educating learners and parents on the importance of immunisation
Collaboration & Data Management
- Working alongside stakeholders such as NGOs, community structures, and support partners
- Maintaining accurate health records, including consent forms
- Ensuring quality assurance in all health-related reporting
Minimum Job Requirements
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet the following criteria:
Education & Qualifications:
- Matric Certificate (NQF Level 4)
- Diploma or Degree in General Nursing (NQF Level 6)
- Additional qualifications in Midwifery, Community Health Services, or Psychiatry will be an added advantage
- Registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC)
Experience & Skills:
- At least 3 years of post-registration experience as a professional nurse
- Basic knowledge of interpersonal relations and customer service
- Experience in health outreach programs is an advantage
Technical Skills & Competencies:
- Conducting health assessments and vaccinations
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
- Ability to solve problems through negotiation and consensus building
- Knowledge of health promotion, financial management, and quality assurance
