Key Responsibilities
The role of a Porter is vital to maintaining the smooth operations of the hospital. Responsibilities include:
- Transporting Patients: Accompany walking patients and transport those who require trolleys or wheelchairs between wards and treatment areas. Assist with patient loading and unloading from ambulances or vehicles.
- Specimen Delivery: Safely deliver medical specimens to laboratories as needed.
- Equipment Management: Check and replace gas cylinders in wards and treatment areas. Assist with shifting medical equipment between rooms.
- Mortuary Duties: Handle the transportation of corpses from wards to the mortuary, maintain mortuary registers, and perform related duties in the mortuary.
- Cleanliness and Maintenance: Ensure wheelchairs, trolleys, and other equipment are kept clean and in good working order. Report any defects to supervisors.
- Hygiene and Safety: Uphold infection prevention protocols and maintain a hygienic work environment.
Requirements for Applicants
Essential Skills and Experience:
- Previous porter or mortuary experience in a public health facility.
- Basic reading and writing skills.
- Good interpersonal and communication abilities.
- Knowledge of safe infection prevention methods.
Personal Attributes:
- Ability to work under pressure and without supervision.
- Capability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Physically fit and of sober habits, with the ability to lift and transport patients or heavy equipment.
- Willingness to work shifts, including night shifts, weekends, and public holidays.
- Preparedness to handle deceased bodies and work overtime when necessary.
Remuneration and Benefits
The position offers an annual salary ranging from R131,265 to R154,626, along with standard service benefits, which include:
- A 13th cheque.
