Newlands Brewery is currently seeking an experienced and driven Utilities Engineer to join their team.     The Role of Utilities Engineer

    The Utilities Engineer at Newlands Brewery will be responsible for overseeing the effective and reliable supply of key utilities to various plant processes. This involves ensuring that essential systems, such as refrigeration, steam, CO2, and compressed air, run smoothly and reliably. In addition to managing daily operations, the role will focus on improving plant reliability through maintenance practices, leading cost-saving initiatives, and driving the implementation of plant optimization strategies.

    The successful candidate will also be expected to take a leadership role within the utilities department, managing a team of artisans while fostering a culture of safety and continuous improvement. The position is integral to maintaining the operational success of the brewery and ensuring that it can meet production targets while adhering to the highest safety standards.

    Key Responsibilities of the Utilities Engineer

    1. Ensuring Safety Compliance

    A central part of the role is to ensure that the utilities team follows all safety policies and procedures outlined by the plant. The Utilities Engineer will be responsible for enforcing adherence to safety regulations and identifying any unsafe practices or conditions within the utilities plant. Additionally, the engineer will oversee the implementation of Ammonia and Steam Process Safety Management (PSM) to ensure that these critical systems operate without risk to personnel or equipment.

    2. Maintaining Plant Reliability

    Another important responsibility is ensuring the reliability of the utilities plant. The engineer will be expected to oversee the planning and execution of routine, corrective, preventive, and predictive maintenance. By developing detailed maintenance procedures and leveraging problem-solving tools, the Utilities Engineer will lead efforts to ensure that plant performance remains optimal. Furthermore, the engineer will play an active role in identifying potential areas for improvement and ensuring the team is fully equipped to handle maintenance tasks.

    3. Optimizing Plant Performance

    The Utilities Engineer will also take a proactive approach to plant optimization. By analyzing plant performance data, the engineer will identify opportunities for improvement, implement cost-saving projects, and evaluate new equipment and modifications to enhance efficiency. This also involves evaluating suggestions for plant performance improvements and taking ownership of related projects.

    4. Leading and Developing the Team

    As a leader, the Utilities Engineer will be responsible for managing the utilities artisans, helping them to develop their skills and improve their performance. This includes conducting training needs assessments, developing training plans, and providing ongoing support to ensure the team stays competent and motivated. Regular performance reviews and one-on-one meetings will be essential to help team members achieve their personal and professional goals.

    Qualifications and Skills Required

    To be considered for the role, candidates must meet the following requirements:

    • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (Chemical, Electrical, or Electromechanical)
    • 3 to 5 years of experience in plant operations and maintenance
    • In-depth knowledge of Refrigeration, Steam, CO2, and Compressed Air Plants
    • Proven ability to manage and lead teams effectively
    • Demonstrated experience in coaching and capacity building
    • GCC (Government Certificate of Competency) in factories will be an advantage
    • Category A&B Ammonia competence certificate is beneficial
    • Strong problem-solving abilities and analytical skills
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to write technical reports
