The Mining Qualifications Authority (MQA) Bursary Scheme was established to promote the skills development of historically disadvantaged individuals in South Africa. This bursary aims to encourage more students to pursue qualifications in the mining and minerals sector, thus ensuring a steady stream of skilled professionals in these fields.

What Does the MQA Bursary Cover?

The MQA Bursary is one of the most comprehensive bursary schemes available in South Africa, providing financial support to students who meet the necessary criteria. Here is a breakdown of what the bursary covers:

    • Full Tuition and Registration Fees: Covers the entire cost of your academic studies, including registration fees.
    • Accommodation Fees: Provides either residence fees or an allowance for private accommodation.
    • Books and Meals: Covers the cost of books and meals, ensuring that students have everything they need to succeed.
    • Allowance: An additional allowance per semester, where applicable, to assist with other academic or personal expenses.

    Eligibility for the MQA Bursary

The MQA Bursary Scheme is available to deserving South African citizens who fall into two main categories: Unemployed Bursaries and Employed Bursaries.

    1. Unemployed Bursary

The Unemployed Bursary is targeted at learners who are currently in Grade 12 or are already enrolled at a public university, university of technology, or TVET college (Nated courses: N4 to N6 and NCV qualifications). The bursary is intended to support students for the 2025 academic year.

Selection Criteria for Unemployed Bursary Applicants:
    • Historically Disadvantaged Individuals: Preference will be given to individuals from historically disadvantaged backgrounds, including White males under the age of 35.
    • Financially Needy Applicants: Applicants with a combined household income of less than R600,000 per annum are encouraged to apply. MQA will verify household income during the application process.
    • Female Applicants and Rural Community Members: Women and individuals from rural communities are strongly encouraged to apply.
    • Academic Record: Applicants with a strong academic record will receive preference.
    • People with Disabilities: The MQA is committed to supporting people with disabilities.

Special consideration will be given to applicants from the following provinces: Northern Cape, Western Cape, Eastern Cape, North-West Province, and KwaZulu-Natal.

    Conditions for Unemployed Bursary Applicants:

    • Applicants must be unemployed at the time of application and remain unemployed for the duration of their studies.
    • The bursary will cover tuition fees and allowances for accommodation, books, and meals.

    2. Employed Bursary

The Employed Bursary is available to applicants who are currently employed in the mining and minerals sector and wish to further their studies in qualifications relevant to their field. This bursary is not available to applicants currently on an MQA-funded Internship Programme or a Work Experience (P1/P2) Programme to avoid “double dipping.”

Selection Criteria for Employed Bursary Applicants:
    • Historically Disadvantaged Individuals: White males under the age of 35 are also considered under this category.
    • MQA Levy-Paying or Levy-Exempted Employers: Applicants must be employed by an organization that is either paying or exempted from paying MQA levies.
    • People with Disabilities: The MQA is dedicated to supporting individuals with disabilities.

The employed persons’ bursary will cover tuition fees and book allowances but will not include funding for international study tours, conferences, or seminars.
