The Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) is seeking a dedicated eResearch Systems and Web Developer to join the team at the Bellville Campus in Cape Town, South Africa. This permanent position within CPUT Libraries focuses on providing essential technical support to the library’s eResearch platforms.

Job Purpose
The role is integral to maintaining and enhancing the library’s eResearch platforms, which are tailored to meet the institution’s specific needs. The eResearch Systems and Web Developer will ensure that these online platforms function optimally and are accessible to users. This requires a strong command of programming, networking, system design, and web development, paired with excellent communication and analytical skills.
The ideal candidate will support technical alignment between the library, the university’s IT department, and the Research & Innovation team. By driving the development and management of research systems, the successful applicant will play a vital role in advancing the institution’s research capabilities.
Key Responsibilities
1. System Management
The developer will:
- Collaborate with library staff, CTS Services, and the Research & Innovation team to identify technical requirements for eResearch.
- Align with the University IT Department’s ICT strategy to design a scalable research infrastructure.
- Develop policies for research data management, preservation, and access.
- Support the integration and usage of research management tools across the university.
2. Systems Design
The position involves:
- Designing, coding, testing, and documenting complex programs to achieve optimal functionality.
- Producing detailed system designs, including user interfaces, workflows, and backup procedures.
- Translating logical system designs into physical models and ensuring their compatibility with existing systems.
- Executing test plans to verify the performance and security of completed systems.
3. Systems Development
Key activities include:
- Implementing and maintaining compliance with development standards.
- Planning and conducting tests to eliminate errors and ensure high-quality outputs.
- Documenting all work thoroughly for clarity and future reference.
4. Web Development
The eResearch Systems and Web Developer will:
- Maintain and update the library’s website for optimal user experience.
- Strategize with the Library Web Environment Working Group to enhance accessibility and service delivery.
Job Knowledge, Skills, and Experience
Minimum Requirements
- A four-year qualification in Computer Science, Information Systems, Information Technology, or a related field.
- At least three years of experience in software design and programming.
- Flexibility to work across campuses when required.
