About the Role
The Artisan Fitter will report directly to the Foreman Engineering and will be responsible for the upkeep and repair of critical mining equipment. The role requires hands-on expertise in various technical areas such as winding plant maintenance, headgear, and shaft equipment, as well as pumps and fans.
The successful candidate will work closely with a team to ensure all maintenance work is carried out according to agreed-upon procedures, standards, and safety protocols. They will also be involved in stakeholder engagement and must ensure effective supervision of themselves and their team in line with the values and leadership initiatives of Murray & Roberts Cementation.
Key Responsibilities
- Winding Plant Maintenance: Responsible for carrying out maintenance on the winding plant according to set standards and regulations.
- Headgear and Shaft Equipment: Ensuring the maintenance and repair of headgear and shaft equipment follows proper procedures to guarantee smooth operations.
- Pumps and Fans: Regular maintenance and servicing of pumps and fans as per the established maintenance schedules.
- Leadership and Supervision: Oversee the work of oneself and the team, ensuring alignment with the company’s values, while demonstrating strong leadership qualities.
- Compliance: Ensure all tasks are completed in line with SHEQ standards, and the company’s operational procedures and safety protocols are followed meticulously.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Maintain effective communication and engagement with stakeholders to ensure that all activities run smoothly.
Minimum Requirements
To be considered for the position, candidates must meet the following minimum qualifications and experience:
- Educational Requirements: A Grade 12 certificate or its equivalent (NQF4).
- Certification: A Section 26 Fitter Trade Certificate or a MIETTB (Mining Industry Engineering Trades Training Board) Trade Certificate obtained through a registered body such as Olifantsfontein pre-1994, ESTC, or GFA is essential.
- Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills in English are required.
- Driver’s License: A valid Code EB driver’s license is necessary to ensure transportation access within the mine site.
- Medical Certificate of Fitness: Candidates must provide a valid medical certificate indicating fitness for work, including heat tolerance for underground work.
- Work Experience:
- At least 5 years of underground experience, particularly in shaft sinking.
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience as a trade-tested Artisan Fitter.
- Solid knowledge of winding plant operations, with experience working on kibble and stage winders.
- Proven experience in the maintenance of fans and pumps.

The position is based at the IvanPlats Platreef Mine in Mokopane, Limpopo, and involves working in an underground mining environment. Successful candidates must be comfortable with working in challenging conditions and have the physical stamina to meet the demands of this hands-on role.
