The South African Wind Energy Association (SAWEA) is delighted to announce that applications are officially open for the 2025 Wind Industry Internship Programme (WIIP). This annual initiative is central to South Africa’s mission of establishing a low-carbon economy and climate-resilient society, contributing to the nation’s Just Energy Transition Investment Plan (JET IP) and the South African Renewable Energy Master Plan (SAREM). Applications opened on October 24, 2024, and will close on November 14, 2024.
In a country where youth unemployment is a pressing issue—currently estimated at 46.6% for those aged 15 to 34, as per Statistics South Africa’s Q2 2024 Quarterly Labour Force Survey—the WIIP aims to create practical, hands-on opportunities for young South Africans in the burgeoning renewable energy sector. In the first quarter of 2024, wind technology made up 4.9% of South Africa’s total electricity consumption.
By the third quarter, this figure had risen to 5.3%, showcasing the expanding role of wind energy in the country’s power mix. With an additional 2.2 gigawatts (GW) of wind energy projects under construction, South Africa’s wind sector is on track to provide over 10% of the nation’s installed electricity capacity, solidifying wind as a leading renewable energy source in South Africa’s energy landscape.
A Critical Internship Opportunity for Young South Africans
With the expansion of the wind energy industry comes a demand for a diverse range of skills and roles. The WIIP serves as a crucial bridge for young graduates transitioning from their academic journeys to gainful employment. Since its establishment in 2022, the programme has seen a surge in interest from both the wind energy sector and South African youth. Now in its fourth year, the WIIP has shown significant success, placing more than 20 interns in 2024 alone—many of whom have seamlessly transitioned into permanent roles. For the 2025 intake, SAWEA aims to place 30 interns across its member organisations, providing structured, hands-on training within the renewable energy field.
Interns accepted into the 2025 programme will embark on an enriching eight-month practical experience. New for 2025, the programme will feature a comprehensive 10-day Work Readiness Programme (WRP), which is designed to equip participants with essential workplace skills, including computer literacy and professional conduct. This foundational training will ensure that interns are well-prepared to navigate professional environments and succeed in their roles.
The programme is open to young South Africans from a range of academic backgrounds, including engineering, natural sciences, administration, social sciences, and information technology. Through the WIIP, participants will contribute meaningfully to South Africa’s renewable energy objectives while enhancing their own professional skills.
A Step Towards Building South Africa’s Renewable Energy Future
The WIIP is an investment not only in young professionals but also in South Africa’s renewable energy future. According to Morongoa Ramaboa, SAWEA’s Chief Communications Officer, the wind energy sector has a unique role in mitigating climate change, fostering job creation, and promoting community development.
“We are excited to cultivate the next generation of renewable energy leaders,” said Ramaboa. “As the wind energy sector grows, we see emerging roles that require new expertise, such as engineers, project managers, environmental experts, and data analysts. Through WIIP, we are attracting passionate youth and nurturing their skills in alignment with the sector’s rapid evolution.”
The programme provides opportunities for young professionals to engage directly with the transformative work of renewable energy in South Africa. In the process, WIIP empowers a diverse talent pool and contributes to a more resilient economy, one that aligns with global and local climate goals.
How to Apply
Young professionals interested in joining the WIIP for 2025 are encouraged to submit their applications as soon as possible.
