Key Requirements

  • Hold a recognized Bachelor’s Degree or National Diploma/B-Tech in Ultrasound Radiography from an accredited institution, ensuring a strong foundation in the principles and practices of radiography.
  • Current registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as an Ultrasound Radiographer is mandatory, confirming the candidate’s eligibility to practice in a clinical setting.
  • A broad range of experience from 0 to 20 years as an Ultrasound Radiographer/Sonographer, welcoming both new graduates and seasoned professionals.
  • Demonstrated experience in handling diverse patient cases across various ultrasound modalities.
  • Expertise in Obstetrics, Gynaecology, and Abdominal Ultrasound, capable of conducting complex diagnostic procedures to assist in patient diagnosis and management.
  • Skill in utilizing advanced ultrasound equipment and technology to produce and interpret accurate images.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team, adapting to the dynamic needs of the department and patients.
  • Proven track record of collaborating with other healthcare professionals to provide patient-centered care.
  • Good understanding of Public Service Regulations, the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA), and other relevant healthcare policies and practices, ensuring compliance and governance.
  • Knowledge of the Ideal Clinic Realization and Maintenance Framework and its application in the healthcare setting.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel) to manage documentation, reports, and presentations related to radiography services.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to foster positive relationships within the workplace and provide empathetic patient care.
  • Capacity to contribute to the department’s long-term goals through proactive planning and resource management.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize workload, manage time effectively, and plan strategically to meet the operational needs of the department while maintaining high standards of care.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for effective patient interaction, reporting, and collaboration with healthcare teams.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare patients for Ultrasound examinations by explaining procedures, ensuring their comfort, and addressing any concerns they may have.
  • Assess patient history and clinical conditions to choose appropriate ultrasound techniques and procedures.
  • Select the appropriate ultrasound equipment and settings for different types of examinations, ensuring optimal image quality.
  • Perform routine and specialized ultrasound examinations including but not limited to abdominal, obstetric, and pelvic scans.
  • Regularly check and maintain ultrasound equipment to ensure it functions properly.
  • Conduct quality control tests to uphold the department’s standards and ensure reliable results.
  • Engage in Continuous Professional Development (CPD) to enhance technical skills and stay updated with the latest advancements in ultrasound technology.
  • Attend seminars, workshops, and conferences related to radiography and patient care.
  • Manage and monitor stock levels of ultrasound supplies to ensure availability and timely replenishment.
  • Analyze waiting times and strategize improvements to enhance patient throughput and satisfaction.
  • Maintain accurate records of equipment usage and inventory to prevent shortages and overstock.
  • Actively participate in team meetings to discuss cases, share insights, and coordinate care.
  • Compile and maintain weekly, monthly, and annual patient statistics to monitor departmental productivity and efficiency.
  • Foster a collaborative environment within the ultrasound department and with other multidisciplinary team members to ensure a holistic approach to patient care.
  • Adhere to all relevant health and safety regulations, including infection control measures, to ensure a safe environment for both staff and patients.
  • Participate in training and drills to maintain readiness for handling health emergencies.
