Train Driver Job Description
The role of a Train Driver Surface is critical for the smooth transportation of ore, personnel, and materials within Sibanye-Stillwater’s mining operations. The appointed candidate will be responsible for operating surface locomotives, performing safety inspections, and ensuring compliance with company standards and procedures.
Key Responsibilities
As a Train Driver Surface, your primary responsibilities will include:
- Operational Excellence:
- Perform a pre-use inspection of equipment such as testing brakes, warning devices, and emergency stops.
- Safely operate surface locomotives to transport ore, personnel, and materials.
- Maintain and comply with Safety, Health, and Environmental (SHE) standards.
- Complete checklists and report any deficiencies to the supervisor.
- Park and lock locomotives as per standard procedures at the end of each shift.
- SHE Compliance:
- Participate in risk assessments and take appropriate action as per identified risks.
- Adhere to all company policies and procedures related to safety, health, and the environment.
- People Management:
- Provide on-the-job coaching and training to staff.
- Manage performance and development of reporting staff members.
- Ensure fair work allocation and inspire team members to achieve high performance levels.
- Stakeholder Relations:
- Build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Ensure open communication channels with all relevant parties.
- Financial Management:
- Adhere to cost-saving and cash conservation initiatives.
- ESG Compliance:
- Align to international responsible mining principles and Sibanye-Stillwater’s sustainability goals.
Minimum Requirements
To be eligible for the position, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Educational Requirements:
- Train Driver Certificate.
- Surface Railways Rule Book.
- NQF 4 (National Senior Certificate or Grade 12, or National Senior Certificate for Adults).
- Additional Requirements:
- 1-3 years of experience for external candidates.
- Knowledge of communication protocol, yard and siding layout, and railroad routes.
- Clear security screening record.
- Medically fit to work in the specific business area.
