    Purpose of the Job

    The primary responsibility of the Switchboard Operator is to manage incoming and outgoing calls in a professional and friendly manner. The role requires liaising with various stakeholders, including doctors, executive personnel, the public, and colleagues. Effective communication skills and cultural adaptability are essential, as the candidate will be responsible for directing calls to the appropriate departments and ensuring that communication within the hospital flows smoothly.

    Key Responsibilities

    The successful candidate will be expected to:

    • Answer incoming calls and direct outgoing calls in a professional and pleasant manner.
    • Communicate effectively with doctors, executives, patients, and colleagues.
    • Handle complaints and direct them to the appropriate channels.
    • Maintain confidentiality and adhere to the hospital’s policies on information security.
    • Keep all relevant information updated, including contingency plans and hospital telephone lists.
    • Provide assistance during overtime shifts when required.
    • Support the reception team during patient admissions.
    • Perform various administrative tasks as assigned by the manager or reception supervisor.

    Qualifications and Experience Required

    Applicants must meet the following criteria to be considered for the role:

    • A Grade 12 certificate or an equivalent NQF Level 4 qualification.
    • A minimum of two years of experience in a hospital environment.
    • Knowledge of Tri-Four or similar switchboard systems will be an added advantage.

    Key Competencies

    To succeed in this role, candidates should possess:

    • Computer literacy.
    • Knowledge of Health and Safety Rules and emergency procedures.
    • A proactive and organized mindset with the ability to multitask under pressure.
    • Strong teamwork and adaptability.
