    Job Description:

    As part of the STEC Internship Opportunity, the intern will be reporting to the Science Centre Coordinator and will assist with all aspects of the Science Centre’s operations. Primary responsibilities include:

    • Supporting the facilitation of science workshops and science shows at both the STEC facility and in the field at various schools.
    • Developing educational workshop materials and keeping the Centre’s educational offerings up-to-date.
    • Conducting administrative tasks, including managing records and assisting with organizational functions within the Science Centre.
    • Helping maintain the technical aspects of exhibits and displays to ensure they are functional and engaging.
    • Assisting with the operations of the Science4U Mobile Science Lab, offering hands-on science activities in rural and under-resourced schools.

    Additionally, the intern will have occasional after-hours and weekend responsibilities as part of the Centre’s public events and outreach programs. The role involves frequent driving to field locations, making a valid driver’s license essential.

    Minimum Requirements:

    To qualify for the STEC Internship Opportunity, applicants must meet the following criteria:

    • A BSc Honours or BSc Engineering degree.
    • A strong background in Physics at the university level.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively interact with diverse groups, including learners, educators, and colleagues.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel for administrative tasks.
    • A valid driver’s license is required due to the mobile outreach component of the role.

    Key Responsibilities:

    1. Workshop Facilitation:
      Assist in the planning and execution of science workshops, which engage learners in interactive, educational activities.
    2. Outreach Programs:
      Help the Science4U Mobile Science Lab bring science education to communities that lack access to adequate scientific resources. This includes assisting with travel arrangements, setting up experiments, and interacting with learners in the field.
    3. Resource and Material Development:
      Work with the Science Centre team to create new and innovative workshop materials, ensuring that they are effective in stimulating learner interest in science.
    4. Public Relations Support:
      STEC plays an important role in promoting the College of Agriculture, Engineering, and Science. The intern will contribute to public engagement efforts and promotional activities as needed.
    5. Event Participation:
      Assist in organizing and participating in special events such as science fairs, school tours, and other educational outreach efforts, which may require flexible working hours.
