    About the Role

    The SSHE Officer Assistant position at Tiger Brands is a permanent role designed for individuals with some experience or recent graduates in the SSHE (Safety, Health, and Environment) field. The primary responsibility of this position is to assist the Site SSE Officer in identifying, assessing, and minimizing job-related risks, ensuring that safety protocols are followed across operations. The ideal candidate will help in the development and implementation of safety procedures to mitigate workplace hazards and promote a culture of continuous improvement.

    Key Responsibilities

    As an SSHE Officer Assistant, you will be responsible for a range of activities that contribute to the health, safety, and environmental standards across Tiger Brands’ operations.

    1. Assisting with Internal Audits:
    One of the key responsibilities includes participating in planning and conducting internal audits related to safety, environmental, and quality standards. This will involve engaging in ISO 14001 and MARSH audits to ensure compliance with safety regulations and company policies.

    2. Incident Investigations and Corrective Actions:
    The SSHE Officer Assistant will play a vital role in investigating workplace incidents, identifying their root causes, and ensuring that corrective actions are carried out efficiently to prevent recurrence. This responsibility is crucial in maintaining a safe work environment.

    3. Risk Assessments:
    The assistant will be tasked with conducting continuous risk assessments for operational tasks. Monitoring and evaluating potential hazards and ensuring appropriate mitigation measures are in place is essential to the role.

    4. Contractor Management:
    This role involves coordinating operational observations and audits related to contractors. Ensuring that contractors adhere to safety protocols and best practices is a key part of the position.

    5. Training and Development:
    The SSHE Officer Assistant will contribute to the development of training material and tools, such as Operational Procedure Lists (OPLs), to simplify safety communication across the workforce. This helps ensure all employees are equipped with the knowledge to maintain safety standards.

    6. Supporting the PJO Schedule and Performance Gap Management:
    The assistant will support routine monitoring of safety performance, identifying and addressing any gaps to ensure safety objectives are met. This includes tracking the progress of corrective actions and monitoring safety-related activities.

    7. Collaboration on MECP Projects:
    The SSHE Officer Assistant will work alongside relevant managers on MECP (Minimum Environmental Compliance Projects) initiatives to drive safety and environmental improvements within the company.

    The key measure of success for this role will be based on monthly performance indicators, such as contractor gap analysis, the number of MECP projects completed, and the closure of safety and operational gaps.

    Key Competencies and Qualifications

    Essential Skills:
    The SSHE Officer Assistant must possess a variety of skills to excel in this role:

    • Core Knowledge: Competencies in data analysis, workplace safety, SHE systems auditing, contractor management, and risk assessment are required.
    • Academic Qualifications: A diploma in safety, engineering, or environmental studies is essential.
    • Personal Effectiveness: Strong communication and interpersonal skills are crucial. The role requires an individual who can write clear reports, work effectively under pressure, and take the initiative when necessary.

    Experience:

    • Industry Experience: A fresh graduate or someone with up to one year of experience in the SSHE field will be considered for the role. Experience in internal auditing, developing action plans, tracking progress, and peer-to-peer coaching is desirable.
    • Industry Background: Experience within the manufacturing or FMCG industry is preferred, as this provides valuable insight into the operational environment and the safety standards required.
