The internship is based in Pretoria West, Gauteng, South Africa, within the Milling Division of RCL Foods.
What is SHER?
SHER stands for Safety, Health, Environment, and Risk—a crucial function in ensuring workplace safety and compliance with health and environmental standards. This internship will equip candidates with essential skills in monitoring, compliance, risk assessment, and workplace safety.
Requirements
To be considered for the SHER Internship Programme, candidates must meet the following minimum requirements:
Education:
- Matric / Grade 12
- Diploma in Health & Safety or Environmental Science, or currently studying towards one.
- SAMTRAC certification (advantageous but not mandatory).
Skills and Competencies:
- Knowledge of health, safety, and environmental compliance.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Good communication and reporting skills.
- Ability to work independently and in a team.
- Attention to detail in compliance, audits, and risk assessments.
Duties and Responsibilities
As a SHER Intern, your role will be diverse and impactful. Some of your key responsibilities include:
1. Safety Compliance & Risk Assessments
- Conduct routine safety compliance inspections and audits.
- Compile safety reports and create action plans for addressing non-compliance.
- Perform and review risk assessments.
2. Fire Safety & First Aid Compliance
- Ensure fire extinguishers and first aid boxes are regularly checked, serviced, and not blocked.
- Schedule and conduct emergency response drills.
3. HSE Documentation & Training
- Maintain and monitor management systems and standard operating procedures.
- Conduct daily inductions for new employees.
- Assist in monthly PPE reconciliation reports.
- Capture training records on SHEQ-X system.
4. Incident Investigations & Reporting
- Participate in incident investigations and compile reports.
- Assist in driving the CAPA (Corrective Actions and Preventative Actions) System.
- Track and share departmental toolbox talks.
5. Engagement and Culture Building
- Engage with employees on the floor to improve health and safety culture.
- Participate in monthly departmental meetings and write meeting minutes.
- Conduct weekly safety training sessions.
6. Contractor and Permit Audits
- Conduct quarterly audits of contractor files.
- Monitor compliance with permits and training regulations.
