What Is the Seriti Community Learner OMM UG Programme?
The Seriti Community Learner OMM UG is a special learnership designed for people with little or no experience in mining. “OMM UG” stands for Operator Mining Machinery – Underground. This means the learner will be trained to use big mining machines that are used underground to dig coal and help with production.
This programme is permanent, based at Khutala Colliery in Emalahleni, and it focuses on developing local talent from the surrounding communities.
Who Can Apply?
Seriti is looking for people who meet the following requirements:
Minimum Requirements:
- Minimum of Grade 10 with Maths, Science, and English
- Must be willing and able to be trained to operate underground mining machinery
- Must be physically fit and healthy
- Should have good communication skills in English (read, write and speak)
- Must be safety-conscious
- Willing to undergo a behavioural assessment
- Must not be afraid of heights or large machinery
- Should be able to work well in a team
- Must be able to work under pressure in a production environment
- Must be willing to undergo a driving assessment
- Must be able to obtain a Certificate of Fitness
Advantageous (Nice to Have):
- Previous mining experience
- Valid K53 driver’s license
This opportunity is specifically for people from Khutala’s host communities, which means locals have the best chance of being selected.
What Will You Learn?
If selected, learners will receive structured training on how to use various mining machines used underground. They will be guided by experienced miners and operators and will be expected to:
- Operate underground coal mining machinery
- Maintain good housekeeping in the mining area
- Identify mechanical faults
- Perform various tasks in and around their working area
- Attend training sessions and complete assessments
