Key Responsibilities of the Security Officer
As the Security Officer, you will be responsible for ensuring the safety and protection of all parties involved, both inside and outside of Council premises. Below are the key areas of responsibility:
1. Protecting Council Property and Personnel
The Security Officer will be tasked with safeguarding Council buildings, installations, assets, and employees. This includes ensuring the security of Council property, employees at their places of duty, and members of the public on Council premises.
2. Managing Security Personnel
A key responsibility is to manage, supervise, and develop subordinate security personnel. The role requires ensuring that all staff comply with security protocols and maintain a high level of professionalism and operational discipline.
3. Administrative Duties

Essential Requirements
The following qualifications and experience are essential for the Security Officer position:
Educational Qualifications
- A Diploma (NQF Level 6) in Police, Military, or a recognized Security/Law Enforcement field.
Security Certifications
- A valid PSIRA Grade A Certificate.
- Valid Firearm Competency Certificate (for Handgun, Rifle, or Shotgun).
- Valid First Aid Certificate (Level 2).
Other Required Certifications
- Valid Peace Officer Certificate, or the ability to obtain one within 1 year of appointment.
- Valid motor vehicle driving license.
Experience
- 4 years of relevant experience, with at least 2 years in a supervisory role within the Security Management field.
Additional Skills
- Computer Literacy is a requirement to effectively manage the administrative and security systems in place.
Preferred Requirements
While not essential, candidates with the following qualifications and experience will have a distinct advantage:
Higher Education
- A Degree (NQF Level 7) in Police, Military, or a recognized Security/Law Enforcement field.
Additional Experience
- A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience, with at least 3 years in a supervisory role within Security Management.
