The South African Veterinary Foundation (SAVF) is once again offering a valuable bursary opportunity for aspiring veterinarians. Established in 1984, the SAVF is a non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting animal education and veterinary research throughout South Africa.

With a strong commitment to the biological and veterinary sciences, the Foundation supports students by offering financial aid in the form of bursaries and loans, while also managing funds aimed at improving the welfare of both animals and humans.

    Supporting South Africa’s Veterinary Students

In partnership with Lakato Veterinary Wholesalers, the SAVF is inviting students to apply for their bursary programme for the 2026 academic year. Since 1999, the Foundation has awarded funding to 4th and 5th year veterinary students, with more than 40 recipients supported to date. For the 2026 intake, four bursaries will be awarded—two each to students in their 4th and 5th years of study—each valued at R12,000.

Unlike many bursary programmes, recipients of the SAVF bursary are not required to commit to a work-back contract upon completion of their studies, making this financial aid both supportive and flexible.

    Who Can Apply?

To qualify for the SAVF Bursary 2026, applicants must meet the following criteria:

    • Must be enrolled in the BVSc (Veterinary Science) programme at the University of Pretoria
    • Must be in 4th or 5th year of study in 2026
    • Must demonstrate financial need
    • Must have obtained a minimum average of 60%
    • Must actively participate in student activities, such as sports, cultural events, or other student-led initiatives

This bursary aims to support academically capable and well-rounded students who show a commitment not only to their studies but also to the broader university community.

    Application Process

Applications for the SAVF Bursary must be submitted online via the SAVF Bursary Application portal. During the process, applicants will be required to:

    1. Provide personal and academic information (including student number and year of study)

Applicants must also upload the following supporting documentation:

    • A brief Curriculum Vitae (CV)
    • Complete academic transcript for 2024 (PDF format)
    • A detailed breakdown of current student debt

Note: Each attachment must be no larger than 25MB and must be submitted in the required format.

    Application Deadline

The closing date for applications is 2 June 2025 at midnight. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered, so eligible candidates are strongly encouraged to apply before the deadline.
