The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF), an agency under the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture (DSAC), is giving South African students a chance to study film or television abroad through its International Bursary Programme for 2025.

    This bursary is aimed at helping passionate, talented individuals gain international education and return with skills to uplift the local industry.

    About the NFVF

    The NFVF was formed to grow South Africa’s film and video industry by funding training and development, supporting local productions, and helping to distribute and market South African films. It also promotes inclusivity by ensuring more previously disadvantaged individuals get involved in the industry.

    What the Bursary Covers

    The NFVF International Bursary will fund:

    • Tuition fees
    • Living expenses, up to a total of R280 000

    This funding is only available for international postgraduate studies in the Film or TV fields (excluding acting or live performance courses).

    Who Should Apply?

    Applicants must meet these requirements:

    • Be a South African citizen or permanent resident
    • Be accepted for a full-time postgraduate Film/TV programme abroad
    • The course must not be available in South Africa
    • Must begin the course in September or October 2025
    • Apply at least 6 months before the course starts
    • Have a strong academic record
    • Be able to prove financial need

    The bursary is ideal for students who are passionate about filmmaking or television production and who want to return to contribute to the South African creative sector.

    Documents Required

    Be sure to upload clear and certified copies of the following:

    • South African ID or proof of permanent residence
    • Full academic record
    • Proof of acceptance or enrolment at an overseas institution
    • Motivational letter explaining why you should be awarded the bursary
    • Proof of financial need (such as parent/guardian income documents)

    Note: Incomplete applications or missing documents may lead to disqualification.

    Deadline for Applications

    The closing date is 7 April 2025 at 17:00. Late applications will not be accepted under any circumstances, so applicants are advised to apply well before the deadline.
