There is no new Z83 form for 2026. The form you must use is the one gazetted on 6 November 2020, which came into effect on 1 January 2021. DPSA vacancy circulars published throughout 2026 still instruct applicants to use exactly that version, and it is the form provided on this page.
If you have been searching for a “2026 Z83”, this is what you are looking for. What matters is not the year in the filename, it is that page 1 of your form reads “Effective 01 January 2021”. Submitting an older Z83 is grounds for disqualification.

Is there a new Z83 form for 2026?
No. This is the single most common question about the Z83, and the answer has been the same for several years: the current form is the one introduced on 1 January 2021, replacing the older 2012 version. No newer Z83 has been gazetted since.
Every “Z83 2026” you see online is that same form, relabelled with the current year. That is not dishonest in itself, people search by year, but it does cause real confusion, and it leads some applicants to keep hunting for a version that does not exist instead of submitting the one that does.
How to check you have the correct form
- Open your Z83 and look at the top of page 1.
- It must read “Effective 01 January 2021”.
- If it says anything else, or carries no effective date, it is the outdated form. Replace it with the download above.
This one check takes five seconds and removes the most avoidable reason for having an application thrown out.
What you must submit, and what you must not
This changed in 2021 and a great deal of advice online is still wrong about it. At the application stage you submit exactly two things:
- A fully completed, signed Z83 form.
- A recently updated, comprehensive CV.
You do not attach certified copies of your qualifications or ID when you apply. Certified copies are requested only if you are shortlisted, on or before the day of your interview, and they are then verified with the South African Qualifications Authority. When they are requested, they must not be older than six months.
The corollary matters just as much: if either the Z83 or the CV is missing, the application is disqualified. Not marked down, disqualified. Those two documents are the entire submission, so there is no margin for forgetting one.
Always read the specific advert as well. A department may ask for something additional, and the advert overrides general guidance.
How to fill in the Z83, section by section
Open the PDF in Adobe Acrobat Reader, Microsoft Edge, or any PDF editor, and type directly into the fields. Typing rather than handwriting removes the legibility problem entirely.
A. Advertised post details
- Enter the job title, department and reference number exactly as printed in the advert. A mismatched reference number is a common reason for an application never reaching the right shortlisting pile.
- State the date you can start, or your notice period.
B. Personal information
- Full name, date of birth, ID number, and passport number if applicable.
- Gender, race and disability status, this section supports Employment Equity reporting.
- Answer the questions on criminal records, disciplinary cases, dismissals and work permits honestly. These are verified.
C. Contact details
- Choose your preferred communication method and give an active phone number and an email address you check daily. Shortlisting notifications are time-sensitive.
D. Language proficiency
- Rate your proficiency in the South African languages listed.
E. Educational qualifications
- Give your highest qualification, the institution and the year obtained.
- Include current studies if you are still registered.
F. Work experience
- List employers, job titles, dates and reasons for leaving.
- Your CV carries the detail, this section is the summary, and the two must agree. Contradictions between your Z83 and your CV are noticed.
G. References
- Three references with names, relationship to you and contact details. Tell them first; a reference who is surprised by the call does you no favours.
Declaration
- Initial every page and sign the declaration. An unsigned Z83 is an incomplete Z83.
Mistakes that get applications disqualified
- Using an outdated form. If page 1 does not say “Effective 01 January 2021”, it is the wrong one.
- Leaving sections blank. “N/A” is acceptable where something does not apply; blank is not. Do not write “see CV” in place of completing a section.
- Not signing, or not initialling every page.
- Omitting the CV. The Z83 alone is an incomplete application.
- A reference number that does not match the advert.
- Details that contradict your CV, dates of employment especially.
- Missing the closing date. Late applications are not considered, and government closing dates are firm.
How to submit
- Complete the form on your device and save a copy for your own records.
- Print and sign it, or sign digitally if the advert accepts that.
- Attach your CV.
- Submit by the method the advert specifies, email, post, or hand delivery. Do not substitute a different method.
- Keep proof: a sent-items copy for email, a receipt or tracking number for post and hand delivery.
Where to find government vacancies
Government posts are published in the Public Service Vacancy Circular each week, and every post states its salary level, reference number and closing date.
- DPSA Circular 28 of 2026, the most recent circular, covering vacancies across 24 departments.
- What government admin clerk posts pay. Level 5 starts at R237,453 a year on a Grade 12 certificate.
- Browse everything currently open in government jobs and latest job opportunities.
Because the Z83 is only half of your submission, the CV you attach decides a great deal. Run yours through our free ATS Resume Scanner before you send it, or build one with the CV Builder if you do not have a current version.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a new Z83 form for 2026?
No. The current Z83 is the version gazetted on 6 November 2020 and effective from 1 January 2021. No newer form has been issued, and DPSA vacancy circulars in 2026 still direct applicants to use it.
Where can I download the Z83 form 2026 PDF?
You can download the current editable Z83 form free from the link at the top of this page. It is the gazetted version effective 1 January 2021, which is the form required for all South African government job applications.
How do I know if my Z83 form is the correct version?
Look at the top of page 1. It must read “Effective 01 January 2021”. If it shows an earlier date or no effective date at all, it is outdated and using it can disqualify your application.
Do I need to submit certified copies with my Z83?
No. At application stage you submit only a completed Z83 and a comprehensive CV. Certified copies are requested only from shortlisted candidates, on or before the interview date, and must not be older than six months at that point.
What happens if I do not attach a CV?
Your application is disqualified. The Z83 and the CV are both compulsory, and an application missing either one is not considered.
Can I type into the Z83 form instead of writing by hand?
Yes. The form is an editable PDF. Open it in Adobe Acrobat Reader, Microsoft Edge or any PDF editor, type into the fields, then save, print and sign. Typing avoids the legibility problems that come with handwriting.
Can I submit the Z83 form electronically?
Only if the advert says so. Some departments accept email submissions, others require a printed and signed copy delivered by post or by hand. Follow the method stated in the advert exactly.
Do I have to complete every section of the Z83?
Yes. Write “N/A” where a section genuinely does not apply to you, but do not leave sections blank and do not write “see CV” in place of completing them. Incomplete forms are a leading cause of disqualification.
Can non-South Africans apply using the Z83 form?
Yes, provided you hold a valid work permit and meet the requirements stated in the advert. The form has a section for permit details.
The bottom line
Stop looking for a 2026 Z83, it does not exist. Download the form effective 1 January 2021, check that date on page 1, complete every section, sign it, and attach a current CV. Those two documents are the whole application, and the most common reasons for rejection are all avoidable: wrong version, blank sections, no signature, or a missing CV.
