The Gauteng Department of Infrastructure Development has unveiled a life-changing opportunity for unemployed youth through the National Youth Service Programme (NYS). This initiative, part of the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP), aims to empower 2 500 participants over two years with practical work experience, critical skills development, and a steady income.

    This exciting programme is scheduled for the 2025-2027 financial years and focuses on upskilling historically disadvantaged youth in Gauteng. Participants will receive a monthly stipend of R3,500 for the entire two-year duration.

    About the National Youth Service Programme

    The National Youth Service Programme is designed to address unemployment and skill shortages among young South Africans. By focusing on technical, administrative, and general work streams, the programme equips participants with hands-on experience and training, preparing them for future employment opportunities.

    Work Experience Opportunities

    The National Youth Service Programme offers three primary streams for participants:

    1. Technical Trade Qualification Positions (Ref #: 2025/01)

    This category focuses on technical trades, including:

    • Electrical work
    • Solar installation and maintenance
    • Plumbing
    • Carpentry
    • Welding
    • Air-conditioning and refrigeration
    • Handy work, painting, and more

    2. Administrative Qualification Positions (Ref #: 2025/02)

    This category includes office-based roles such as:

    • Data capturing
    • Finance and human resource management

    • Social work and psychology
    • Event management, graphic design, and animation

    Eligibility Criteria

    To join the National Youth Service Programme, applicants must meet the following requirements:

    • Be between 18 to 33 years old (below 35 for the duration of the contract).
    • Hold at least a Grade 11 certificate and possess any relevant qualifications.
    • Be a South African citizen with a valid South African ID.
    • Have no criminal record.
    • Reside near project sites in Gauteng Province.
    • Be willing to commit to the two-year programme and sign a contract.
