    Answering the Call of Duty

    Fidelity’s Junior Firefighters form a critical part of the frontline team, responding to emergencies and fire incidents throughout the region. This role is not just about extinguishing flames—it’s about being prepared, being trained, and being physically and mentally ready to save lives under pressure.

    Under the mentorship and supervision of experienced senior firefighters and officers-in-charge, Junior Firefighters will be expected to react promptly to various emergency situations, including:

    • Fires of different scales
    • Rescue operations
    • Hazardous material incidents
    • Medical emergencies requiring first responder care

    With a focus on fire prevention, emergency response, and equipment maintenance, these individuals ensure that communities stay safe and that any potential threats are handled swiftly and professionally.

    Key Responsibilities

    Although under supervision, Junior Firefighters play an active role in:

    • Controlling and extinguishing fires
    • Operating mobile and fixed breathing apparatus
    • Managing equipment for emergency rescue
    • Extricating and treating injured individuals
    • Carrying out fire protection duties
    • Participating in rigorous training exercises and simulations
    • Conducting health and safety inspections
    • Advising on fire safety and prevention measures
    • Maintaining operational readiness of firefighting gear and vehicles

    From operating complex firefighting tools to teaching others the basics of fire prevention, Junior Firefighters carry a great deal of responsibility that directly impacts the safety of the community.

    Qualifications and Skills

    To be eligible for this position, candidates must meet the following minimum requirements:

    • Grade 12 (Matric)
    • Firefighter II Certification (NFPA 1001) – IFSAC Accredited
    • Minimum of 2 years of relevant firefighting experience
    • Valid driver’s license (unendorsed)
    • Advanced driving experience is a plus
    • Medically and physically fit
    • First Aid certifications (Levels 1 to 3)
    • EMT certification is an advantage
    • Hazmat knowledge and experience

    In addition to technical knowledge, applicants must have strong interpersonal and communication skills, a clean criminal record, and the ability to work well under pressure. A sound understanding of firefighting systems, emergency protocols, and the security industry’s code of conduct is also crucial.
