The Royal Danish Embassy in Pretoria has announced exciting internship opportunities for students interested in international diplomacy, politics, trade, and strategic cooperation. The Embassy, responsible for Denmark’s bilateral relations with South Africa and eight other countries in the region, provides an enriching environment for young professionals looking to gain hands-on experience in foreign affairs.

    Internship Positions Available

    The Royal Danish Embassy in Pretoria is offering five internship positions across different teams. These include:

    1. Communication and Public Diplomacy Intern (Ref. No.: COM-1)

    The Communication and Public Diplomacy intern will play a critical role in shaping the Embassy’s communication strategy and public engagement. Key responsibilities include:

    • Managing the Embassy’s digital diplomacy efforts on social media
    • Assisting in public diplomacy projects, press work, and media handling
    • Organizing fairs, workshops, seminars, and public diplomacy events
    • Supporting the youth exchange program and other cultural initiatives

    This position falls under the political team and works closely with the Public Diplomacy and Communication officer.

    2. Political Intern (Ref. No.: POL-1)

    The political team at the Embassy is responsible for fostering strong diplomatic relations between Denmark and South Africa. This role involves:

    • Monitoring political and economic developments in South Africa
    • Assisting in preparing reports on governance, human rights, and gender equality
    • Supporting high-level visits and cultural exchange programs
    • Analyzing South Africa’s economic policies, including budget and sectoral reports

    3. Strategic Sector Cooperation (SSC) Interns (Ref. No.: UDV-1)

    Three interns will be placed within the Strategic Sector Cooperation (SSC) team, working on Denmark’s green diplomacy initiatives and technical partnerships. Responsibilities include:

    • Assisting with project management, monitoring, and progress reporting
    • Supporting business opportunity mapping for Danish industries
    • Facilitating cooperation between Danish and South African research institutions
    • Preparing delegation programs, workshops, and high-level meetings

    4. Trade Council Intern (Ref. No.: TC-1)

    The Trade Council at the Embassy supports Danish companies seeking to enter the South African market. The intern in this role will:

    • Conduct market analyses and partner searches
    • Assist in organizing business delegations and ministerial visits
    • Participate in trade fairs and exhibitions
    • Support business strategy development

    This position provides first-hand experience in international trade, business development, and economic analysis.

    Internship Terms and Requirements

    Eligibility Criteria

    Applicants must:

    • Be enrolled in a Danish tertiary institution or be Danish citizens studying abroad
    • Foreign citizens residing in Denmark for an extended period are also eligible
    • Have strong academic credentials and interest in diplomacy, trade, or strategic cooperation

    Internship Duration

    The Embassy offers two six-month internship terms:

    • 1 February – 31 July (Application deadline: 10 September of the previous year)
    • 1 August – 31 January (Application deadline: 10 March of the same year)

    Financial Assistance and Accommodation

    • The internship is unpaid, but interns receive a stipend of DKK 4,000 – 6,000 per month to cover expenses
    • Interns must stay in the Embassy’s rental house in Pretoria
    • The cost of living in South Africa is lower than in Denmark, making the internship financially manageable

    Additional Considerations

    • Interns must have health and accident insurance covering their entire stay
    • A driver’s license is highly recommended, as public transport is limited in South Africa
    • While crime rates are high, the Embassy provides guidance and support for personal safety
