Who Can Apply? – Requirements for Independent Contractors
To be considered for the role of Independent Contractors (Markers), applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:
1. Academic Qualifications
- A relevant postgraduate qualification equivalent to NQF Level 9 (MEd/MPhil/MTech) or NQF Level 10 (PhD/DEd/DPhil/DTech) in Foundation Phase, Early Childhood Education, or a related field.
2. Work Experience
- Minimum 5 years of teaching experience in Foundation Phase/ECD or experience in higher education (TVET College/University).
- At least 3 years of subject methodology teaching experience in Foundation Phase/ECD or 5 years in a relevant field (TVET College/University).
3. Essential Skills and Competencies
- Basic knowledge of assessment practices and academic regulations.
- Experience in grading and assessment procedures.
- Strong knowledge of plagiarism policies and academic integrity.
- Excellent communication skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing).
- Time management skills – ability to meet deadlines.
- Problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
- Service-oriented approach – a commitment to student support and academic success.
- Ability to work under pressure while maintaining high academic standards.
Responsibilities of Independent Contractors (Markers)
As Independent Contractors, markers will be responsible for:
- Marking assignments and exams fairly and consistently.
- Providing detailed feedback to students for academic improvement.
- Adhering to UNISA’s assessment and plagiarism policies.
- Attending training and assessment meetings.
- Maintaining confidentiality of student assessments.
- Meeting strict deadlines for marking and feedback submission.
Additional Recommendations for Applicants
While not mandatory, the following are strongly recommended for applicants:
- Computer and internet access – Applicants must have a laptop/desktop with reliable internet connectivity. (UNISA does not provide computers or data).
- Experience with online learning systems – Familiarity with Moodle or other LMS platforms is a plus.
- Proficiency in English – ability to read, write, and provide structured feedback.
- Commitment to deadlines – markers must submit assessments within the allocated time.
