    What Is a Front of House Usher?

    As a Front of House Usher, you will be the first friendly face welcoming guests to Artscape’s events. Your role is vital to ensuring patrons have an enjoyable and smooth experience from the moment they enter the venue until they leave. Ushers help guide patrons to their seats, provide information about the venue’s facilities, and assist with any questions or special needs.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    Main Duties:

    • Welcoming Patrons: Greet visitors warmly and help them find their seats.
    • Ticket Checking: Scan and verify tickets to ensure smooth entry.
    • Providing Venue Information: Guide patrons to restrooms, refreshments, and emergency exits.
    • Maintaining Cleanliness: Keep foyers and auditorium areas tidy before, during, and after shows.
    • Safety Checks: Inspect seats, lights, and report lost property or maintenance issues.
    • Handling Queries: Address customer questions and complaints professionally, escalating to the manager if necessary.
    • Accessibility Support: Assist patrons with disabilities and special access needs.
    • Emergency Readiness: Know evacuation procedures and help manage safety in emergencies.
    • Teamwork: Work closely with security, cleaning staff, and the Front of House Manager to maintain a pleasant environment.
    • Promote Shows: Stay informed about upcoming events and actively promote them to patrons.

    Requirements

    Educational & Experience Requirements:

    • Completed Grade 12 certificate
    • Relevant customer service experience preferred, but passion and attitude count too!

    Key Skills & Attributes:

    • Excellent communication skills in at least two of the Western Cape’s predominant languages (English, Afrikaans, isiXhosa)
    • Strong interpersonal skills with a friendly and approachable manner
    • Ability to remain calm under pressure and multitask during busy times
    • Flexibility to work overtime or weekends when needed
    • Good understanding of health and safety protocols
    • Ability to work well within a team
    • Knowledge or interest in arts and culture is an advantage
    • Reliable with good punctuality
