The role of a Fire Extinguishing Attendant is to ensure that all fire-fighting equipment is fully operational and maintained according to South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) 0400 and other relevant standards. This includes routine inspections, equipment maintenance, and training staff in fire safety procedures.
Minimum Requirements
- Grade 10/Standard 8 Technical (Essential/Minimum)
- AET Level 4 (Essential/Minimum)
- 1 year of relevant experience in a Fire Department (Essential/Minimum)
- Psychometric Assessment (Essential/Minimum)
- Certificate of Fitness (Essential/Minimum)
- Public Driver’s License: Code B (Essential/Minimum)
- SAQCC Fire 1475 Certification (Essential/Minimum)
- Competence in Fire Equipment Maintenance (Essential/Minimum)
Duties & Responsibilities
As a Fire Extinguishing Attendant, your responsibilities will include:
- Conduct regular inspections as per schedule and maintain record cards.
- Report any equipment defects immediately to the Fire Master.
- Ensure all equipment meets SABS 0400 standards.
- Maintain and sign inspection registers for all fire extinguishers and equipment.
- Perform inspections according to planned maintenance schedules on critical fire-fighting equipment.
- Carry out monthly equipment inspections to ensure compliance with Business Unit and SABS 0400 standards.
- Inspect standby equipment, including fire vehicles, daily and take steps to ensure all equipment is fully operational.
- Provide firefighting training to staff as per Safety Health Environment and Community (SHEC) requirements.
- Ensure fire alarms and other alert systems are operational.
- Issue and manage hot work permits.
- Conduct monthly tests on all automatic discharge spray systems.
- Address and rectify defects found during inspections as soon as possible.
- Test standby equipment weekly to ensure it remains in serviceable condition.
- Maintain the cleanliness of the fire station using the appropriate cleaning methods and materials.
- Check and test all workshop equipment following Safe Work Procedures (SWP).
- Follow all SHEC programs, including toolbox talks and audits.
- Report any incidents or accidents immediately to the Fire Master in line with set procedures.
- Perform maintenance tasks according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and regulatory standards.
- Use necessary SHEC precautions when working with production equipment.
- Always wear personal protective equipment.
- Inspect all tools and equipment daily before use, following SHEC practices and statutory requirements.
- Ensure the work area is clean and the environment is restored to its original state after completing any tasks.
