The Role: Finance and Administration Intern
The Finance and Administration Intern will join the Core Diagnostics division, where Abbott’s diagnostic solutions are used to tackle critical health challenges worldwide. Located at Abbott’s Roodepoort office in Johannesburg, this role is ideal for a recent graduate with a degree in finance or a related field. The internship provides an opportunity to gain practical experience in financial operations within a global pharmaceutical company.
Key Responsibilities
As a finance intern, you will support the finance department and contribute to various financial tasks, including:
- Debtors Management: You will assist in tracking outstanding payments and reconciling accounts, ensuring that financial records are accurate and up-to-date.
- Invoice Management: Supporting the Billings team, you will be involved in generating, verifying, and processing invoices. This is an essential part of ensuring smooth financial operations within the company.
- Supply Chain Finance: The role will give you an understanding of supply chain finance, where you will ensure that financial controls are followed and cost efficiencies are maintained.
- Collaboration with Global Teams: You will work closely with Abbott’s Germany team to create and manage Purchase Orders (POs) and follow up on payments. This collaboration offers an excellent opportunity to engage in cross-functional finance projects in a global pharmaceutical setting.
- General Finance Support: The internship will also provide exposure to various finance functions, such as budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis, helping you gain a broad understanding of finance within a multinational corporation.
In addition to the financial duties, you will also support administrative tasks, such as processing customer orders, ensuring correct pricing, generating invoices, and managing the backorder report. You will play a crucial role in helping ensure that orders are processed and shipped promptly and that invoices are approved and sent out in a timely manner.
Required Qualifications
Abbott is looking for candidates who meet the following criteria:
- Educational Background: A Bachelor’s degree (BCom) in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or a related field. The company is looking for recent graduates, so prior work experience is not required.
- Technical Skills: Basic computer skills in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint are necessary for performing the tasks effectively.
- Time Management: You should have excellent time management skills and be capable of working under pressure to meet deadlines.
- Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills in English are essential, as you will be required to communicate with internal teams and clients.
