Responsibilities
As an Employee Relations Manager, you will be responsible for providing expert labor relations advice to management, supervisors, and employees. Your role will involve enhancing the visibility of the Employee Relations department and aligning its activities with the company’s vision and mission. Key responsibilities include:
- Advising the business on best practices related to Employee Relations and other relevant legislation.
- Studying, interpreting, and advising all business units on applicable labor laws to ensure compliance.
- Updating, interpreting, and implementing organization policies, procedures, and agreements.
- Presenting best practice solutions to minimize risks, including management reporting and benchmarking statistics.
- Conducting research and advising on new or updated labor legislation.
- Investigating financial and other implications of legislative changes in collaboration with the Group Employee Relations Manager and other specialists.
- Benchmarking against best practices and ensuring compliance with the Employee Relations Framework.
- Providing day-to-day HR/IR advice to managers, directors, and employees.
- Chairing disciplinary hearings and representing the company at the CCMA for conciliation and arbitration processes.
- Managing internal grievances and conducting staff counseling, evaluation, and training.
- Handling incapacity investigations related to poor work performance and ill health.
- Facilitating retrenchment procedures and drafting or reviewing recognition and wage agreements.
- Attending and settling strike actions and developing and presenting training courses on industrial relations.
- Preparing for Department of Labour inspections and engaging in litigation work related to the Labour Court.
- Formulating and implementing HR policies and procedures and drafting correspondence to the Department of Labour.
- Preparing and interpreting policies and statistical reports and maintaining accurate records and reports.
- Planning and coordinating meetings, programs, and activities.
Minimum Requirements
To be considered for this position, candidates must meet the following minimum requirements:
- Essential Qualifications:
- Grade 12 / Matric
- Qualification in Human Resources Management
- 3-5 years of experience as an Employee Relations Generalist
- Advantageous Qualifications:
- Post Graduate Qualification in Human Resource Management, Labour Relations, or Industrial Psychology
- Experience as an ER Generalist in the Retail or FMCG industry
Key Competencies
To excel in this role, you will need the following essential competencies:
- Knowledge of South African labor laws including LRA, BCEA, SDLA, OHSA, COIDA, UIA, UI Contribution Act, SDA, and EEA.
- Proficiency in English (read, write, and speak well).
- Strong communication skills, negotiation, and conflict resolution abilities.
- Relationship-building skills and a strong service orientation towards clients and management.
- Creative problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
- Ability to multitask, reliability, dependability, and a responsible approach to work.
- Basic computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
Advantageous Competencies:
- Proficiency in a second language (read, write, and speak well).
- Ability to effectively facilitate training sessions.
