Economist Position Purpose

As an Economist at the Provincial Treasury, your primary role is to promote effective financial resource allocation. You will provide comprehensive research, analysis, and advice to inform the preparation of the provincial budget and monitor its implementation. This position requires a proactive individual capable of conducting policy and economic research and offering strategic support to provincial entities.

Minimum Requirements for Economist Position

  • A 3-year B degree (or equivalent NQF 7 qualification) in Economics, Finance, Business Administration, Public Policy, or Public Administration.
  • At least 3 years of relevant work experience in economic or policy research, data and statistical analysis, strategic planning, budgeting, and budget policy and strategy monitoring, implementation, and review.
  • A valid driving license (Code B or higher). Note: People with disabilities that restrict driving abilities but have reasonable access to transport may also apply.

Key Performance Areas for Economist Position

  • Budget Overview and Policy Statement: Contribute to the Budget overview and Medium Term Budget policy statement.
  • Research and Analysis: Conduct policy and economic research and analysis to make recommendations for budget policy and allocations.
  • Monitoring and Assessment: Monitor and assess provincial budget preparation, quarterly performance, and annual reports.
  • Strategic Support: Provide strategic insights and support to provincial entities on effective budget policy planning and implementation and performance-related matters.

To qualify for the Economist Position, applicants must have the following competencies.

  • Knowledge: Public sector strategic policy, planning, and budgeting.
  • Skills: Excellent verbal communication, presentation, research, analytics, writing, monitoring, evaluation, and reporting skills.
  • Attributes: Strategic thinking, deciding and initiating, persuading and influencing, working with people, strong interpersonal and relationship management skills, ability to work independently.

Remuneration

The position offers an all-inclusive salary package of R 849,702 per annum (Salary Level 11). Note that employees’ service benefits or obligations (13th cheque, medical assistance, housing assistance, pension-fund contributions, etc.) are funded or co-funded as per applicable prescripts or collective agreements.
