About the Dispensary Support Learnership
The Dispensary Support Learnership at Dis-Chem Pharmacies is a fixed-term position that will allow candidates to work and study simultaneously, preparing them to qualify as Basic Pharmacist Assistants. Successful candidates will undergo a structured learnership program that includes theoretical and practical training, with the goal of eventually becoming fully qualified and registered with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC).
Upon successful completion of the learnership program, employees will be eligible for permanent employment with Dis-Chem Pharmacies as qualified Basic Pharmacist Assistants, providing a solid foundation for a long-term career in the pharmaceutical industry.
Key Responsibilities
As a Dispensary Support staff member, your main responsibilities will include:
- Assisting with Dispensing:
Under the direct supervision of a qualified pharmacist, you will help with dispensing Schedule 1 medicines and other scheduled substances. This will include ensuring that all medications are accurately dispensed and packed according to the instructions. - Preparation of Medicines:
You will assist in the preparation of non-sterile medicines and other substances, according to specific formulas and standard operating procedures (SOPs) approved by the responsible pharmacist. - Stock Management and Merchandising:
You’ll help with unpacking stock, organizing dispensary shelves, ensuring stock is neatly arranged, and checking expiry dates. You will also assist with stock rotation and maintaining a clean and organized dispensary. - Customer Service:
A key part of your role will involve assisting patients with general queries, providing information about medications, and tracking prescriptions. You’ll be required to communicate with patients effectively and ensure they receive the correct medication. - Health Promotion:
You will have the opportunity to assist with promoting general health and well-being by providing customers with information about health-related issues, including chronic conditions, HIV, and oncology treatments. - Assist with Chronic and Scheme Authorizations:
You will help with the authorization processes for chronic medications, including HIV/AIDS treatments and oncology medication, ensuring everything is processed correctly and efficiently. - Compliance and Legal Requirements:
Ensuring all actions comply with the legal requirements outlined by the South African Pharmacy Council will be an important part of your role. This includes adhering to all relevant laws regarding medication dispensing and patient safety. - Learning and Development:
As part of your learnership, you will be expected to actively engage in the learning process, gaining knowledge on drug interactions, medication dosages, and the necessary legal requirements of dispensing.
Requirements for Application
To qualify for the Dispensary Support Learnership, candidates must meet the following requirements:
- Education: A Grade 12 (Matric) certificate or Senior Certificate, with a minimum of 50% in Pure Mathematics, Life Science, or Physical Science. An overall average of 50% is required for eligibility.
- Proficiency Test: Applicants must complete a proficiency test that qualifies them to apply for registration with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) as a Learner Basic Pharmacist Assistant.
- Language Skills: Fluency in English and at least one other official South African language is required. You should be able to read, write, and speak both languages.
- Attention to Detail and Organizational Skills: The position requires strong organizational skills to manage stock, medications, and ensure accuracy in dispensing and labeling.
- Customer Service Skills: Excellent communication skills and a patient, customer-focused attitude are essential for the role.
- Computer and Numerical Skills: You will need basic computer skills and numerical abilities to manage stock and handle transactions.
Advantageous Experience
While not required, having previous experience in a retail FMCG environment or with Unisolv, SAP, or E-Scripting systems will be considered advantageous.
