    About the Role

    The successful applicants will take part in a one-year, full-time internship program starting in 2025. This is a training-focused position as part of the Counselling Psychology programme. Interns will be responsible for providing a range of psychotherapeutic services, developing preventative programmes, and ensuring compliance with the professional standards set by the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA).

    Key Responsibilities

    As an Intern Counselling Psychologist, your role will encompass the following:

    1. Psychotherapeutic Services
      • Offer individual and group counselling to students to support their emotional and academic success.
      • Provide therapeutic services to children, adolescents, and other clients at various campuses to meet training requirements.
      • Consult with supervisors, colleagues, and internal stakeholders to ensure effective service delivery.
    2. Programme Development
      • Design and deliver preventative and self-help programmes tailored to student needs.
      • Collaborate with internal role players and use data-driven insights to create impactful interventions.
    3. Career Testing and Academic Support
      • Develop and conduct academic support services and career assessments.
      • Offer feedback to students and parents on assessments.
      • Engage with academic personnel and students to determine needs for additional support.
    4. Research and Professional Development
      • Contribute to research that informs the development of student-centric programmes.
      • Enhance professional knowledge through continuous learning and regular supervision.
    5. Institutional Participation
      • Work collaboratively with the Student Counselling Unit and other networks within the university.

    Minimum Requirements

    Candidates must meet the following criteria:

    • Proven registration as an MA or MSc Counselling Psychology student at an accredited institution.
    • Registration as a student/intern psychologist with the HPCSA (Counselling Psychology category).
    • Successful completion of first-year coursework and practical training in their respective counselling psychology programme.
    • Compliance with all HPCSA requirements.

    Essential Skills and Attributes

    • Knowledge of psychological interventions and brief therapy techniques.
    • Ability to conduct psychometric assessments and diagnose psychological issues within the counselling scope.
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both written and verbal).
    • Flexibility to meet service demands, work under pressure, and manage crisis interventions.
    • Commitment to professionalism, confidentiality, and sensitivity to diversity.
    • Proficiency in MS Word, PowerPoint, and email communication tools.

    Preferred Experience

    • Practical experience within a clinical environment.
    • Familiarity with psychometric testing and report writing.
    • Prior registration with the HPCSA as an intern psychologist.

    Remuneration

    The total remuneration package for this position is R126,120 per annum, as per UP policy guidelines.
