The Road Accident Fund (RAF), a pivotal institution in South Africa, is currently seeking to fill the role of Consultant: Loss Of Support (LOS) Adjudication X3. This is a 12-month, fixed-term contract based in Johannesburg, Gauteng. The RAF’s core mission is to provide timely and compassionate compensation to individuals injured as a result of motor vehicle accidents and to ensure the safety of South African roads.

    Purpose of the Role:

    The primary purpose of the Consultant: Loss Of Support Adjudication position is to process claimant applications concerning loss of support adjudication. This position requires individuals to thoroughly assess claims and supporting documents, ensuring adherence to established adjudication standards.

    The consultant will play a critical role in determining the deceased’s ability to support their dependents, based on a detailed review of income documentation and applicable case laws.

    Key Responsibilities:

    Loss of Support Adjudication:

    The consultant will be responsible for reviewing claims in line with the loss of support adjudication standards, ensuring that all the criteria are met. This includes:

    • Assessing the claimant’s supporting documents and data to determine the deceased’s duty to support, verifying the relationship with dependents.
    • Evaluating income-related data and documentation to determine the deceased’s ability to support their dependents, which will influence the final quantum.
    • Applying applicable case laws and statutory limits to accurately calculate the loss of support (LOS) quantum, ensuring compliance with the law.
    • Making a final determination on whether to approve or reject the claim, based on the gathered findings.
    • Collaborating with the internal actuarial team to assess actuarial reports and deciding whether to instruct further calculations.

    Quality Assurance:

    In addition to adjudicating claims, the consultant will be tasked with ensuring that processes and procedures maintain the highest standards. This includes:

    • Researching, analyzing, and reviewing policies and laws that affect the cases under review.
    • Participating in consultations to improve claims and related processes.
    • Maintaining unusual occurrence procedures, ensuring that claims are processed efficiently and accurately.

    Administrative Support:

    The consultant will also assist with various administrative tasks, such as:

    • Responding to correspondence and producing essential documents like reports, briefing papers, and presentations.
    • Assisting with the typing and editing of technical papers, letters, and internal memos.

    Reporting:

    The consultant will be required to:

    • Track and report against set objectives and targets, ensuring that the team is on track to meet performance goals.
    • Report on emerging risks and offer suggestions for process improvements.
    • Provide ad hoc reports related to process initiatives, ensuring continuous improvement.

    Stakeholder Management:

    Maintaining positive relationships with all stakeholders is critical in this role. The consultant will:

    • Follow up and resolve queries, providing appropriate recommendations for corrective actions.
    • Update stakeholders regularly on the status of queries, ensuring all parties are kept informed within predefined turnaround times.

    Qualifications and Experience:

    The ideal candidate for the Consultant: Loss of Support Adjudication X3 position must have:

    • A Bachelor’s Degree or Advanced Diploma in a related field.
    • At least three years of experience in a claims adjudication-related environment.
    • A sound understanding of Motor Vehicle Accident legislation and its application.
