The City of Cape Town has opened its doors to aspiring electricians with a golden opportunity that could pave the way to a stable and rewarding career. Through its latest initiative under the Directorate of Energy, the Electricity Generation and Distribution department is calling on enthusiastic and technically inclined individuals to apply for an apprenticeship programme that offers both training and a basic salary.

A Step into the World of Electricity

This apprenticeship isn’t just a job—it’s a launchpad into the vital and ever-evolving electrical industry. The City aims to attract individuals who are passionate about working with electrical systems and who wish to build their careers from the ground up.

With a competitive salary of R139,554.00 under the T2B Basic Salary scale, the programme allows successful candidates to learn while earning. This makes the opportunity ideal for young adults and others from the City of Cape Town metropolitan area who are looking to upskill themselves and gain hands-on experience.

    Who Can Apply?

To ensure that the best candidates are selected, the City has laid out clear eligibility criteria. Applicants must have at least one of the following educational qualifications:

    • NTC 3 technical qualification with subjects such as Electrical Trade Theory, Mathematics, Engineering Science, or Industrial Electronics.
    • Technical Matric (Grade 12) with subjects including English, Electrical Trade Theory, Mathematics, and Physical Science.
    • A full NCV 4 Electrical qualification with all seven subjects completed.

Candidates must also have a genuine passion for the electrical field and must not already be qualified in any trade. To keep the focus on developing new talent, those holding a National S Diploma or higher qualification are not eligible.

Additionally, applicants must reside within the City of Cape Town metropolitan area and are recommended to have a valid Code C1 (old Code 10) driver’s licence, although this is not a strict requirement.

    An Inclusive and Transparent Process

The application process is designed to be fair and transparent. Applicants must be willing to undergo various checks and verifications, such as criminal and security checks, personal verification, and even lifestyle audits if necessary.

By applying, candidates consent to the use of their personal information for recruitment and selection purposes. This ensures a professional process that respects applicants while maintaining high standards.

    How to Apply

For internal staff, applications must be submitted online via the SAP Portal. External candidates are encouraged to apply through the City’s careers website

While it is not required to submit certified copies of qualifications during the initial application, these documents must be readily available upon request. Applicants are kindly reminded that if they do not receive any notification of appointment within three months from the closing date, they should consider their application unsuccessful.

    Deadline for Applications

All applications must be submitted before or on 4 April 2025, which is the official closing date. The City encourages all eligible individuals not to miss this life-changing opportunity.

    Creating Futures, Powering Dreams

This apprenticeship is more than a job posting—it’s a doorway to a better future. For many young South Africans, especially those who may not have had the chance to pursue university education, such programmes can be game-changers.

Not only does it provide a chance to develop practical skills, but it also allows apprentices to become part of a city initiative that keeps Cape Town powered and connected.
