The Chinese Government, in collaboration with the South African Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), is offering a prestigious scholarship program for the 2024/25 academic year.     Scholarship Overview

    The Chinese Government Scholarship supports undergraduate, postgraduate (Master’s and PhD), and non-degree Chinese language studies. It is designed to equip recipients with knowledge and skills in priority areas while promoting cultural exchange.

    Undergraduate programs are conducted in Chinese, requiring applicants to possess a minimum Chinese proficiency level of HSK 4. For postgraduate studies, programs are available in both Chinese and English, though the language of instruction varies by institution and program.

    The scholarship program spans over 289 Chinese universities, offering an extensive range of fields of study. Notably, applications for medical degrees are currently not supported.

    Benefits of the Scholarship

    The scholarship provides a comprehensive package for selected students:

    • Tuition Fees: Covered up to specified annual limits based on the program.
    • Accommodation: On-campus housing support.
    • Monthly Stipend: Ranges from RMB 30,000 to RMB 42,000 annually, depending on the level of study.
    • Medical Insurance: RMB 800 annually.

    In addition, the South African Government will offer:

    • A return economy airfare.
    • A monthly stipend.
    • A one-off settlement allowance.
    • Research funding (postgraduate students only).
    • Visa costs and a pre-departure orientation in Pretoria.

    Eligibility Criteria

    Applicants must meet the following requirements:

    • Be South African citizens in good health.
    • Achieve a minimum average of 60-65% in previous academic studies.
    • Commit to studying in China from September 2024.
    • Display a strong interest in China and dedication to South Africa’s development.
    • Meet the academic requirements for a similar program at a South African institution.

    Age Requirements:

    • Non-degree Chinese language studies: Under 35 years.
    • Bachelor’s degree: Under 25 years.
    • Master’s degree: Under 35 years.
    • Doctoral degree: Under 40 years.

    Application Process

    The application process involves two steps:

    1. Chinese Government Scholarship Online Application
      Applicants must register at the official China Scholarship Council website (www.campuschina.org) and select “Program Category Type A” using Agency Number 7101. A detailed application guide is available on the website.
    2. DHET Application Submission
      Applicants must complete the DHET application form and email it with all required documents to chinaapplications@dhet.gov.za by 26 January 2024.

    Required Documents

    Applicants must submit the following:

    1. Completed DHET application form.
    2. Copy of a valid South African ID and passport (valid beyond March 2024).
    3. Certified copies of academic transcripts and qualifications.
    4. Language proficiency certificates (HSK for Chinese programs or IELTS/TOEFL for English programs).
    5. A study plan or research proposal (minimum 800 words for postgraduates).
    6. Two reference letters from academic or professional sources.
    7. Medical examination form completed by a certified physician.
    8. Non-criminal record certificate issued within six months of application submission.

    For undergraduate applicants, a certified National Senior Certificate with a university pass and a minimum average of 65% (excluding Life Orientation) is required.

    Application Tips

    Applicants are advised to apply to at least three Chinese universities to improve admission chances. For postgraduate students, securing a supervisor and obtaining a pre-admission letter from the chosen university is recommended.

    The DHET emphasizes the importance of verifying qualifications with the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) to ensure local recognition.

    Deadlines and Notification

    The application deadline is 26 January 2024. Successful applicants will be notified by 31 July 2024. An orientation session will be held in Pretoria before departure to equip students with essential information for their study journey.
