The City of Cape Town has opened its doors to a promising opportunity for unemployed youth with the launch of the Metro Police and Traffic Learnership Programme. This 18-month training programme is designed to equip young South Africans with the skills required for a career in Road Traffic Law Enforcement.

What Is the Metro Police and Traffic Learnership?
The Metro Police and Traffic Learnership is a structured, 18-month programme that will provide hands-on training in road traffic law enforcement. Starting from 1 June 2025 and ending on 30 November 2026, the learnership will focus on imparting practical skills, including traffic management, public safety, and emergency response.
Throughout the duration of the programme, successful applicants will receive an allowance of R34.91 per hour. The Public Safety Training College will deliver the training, ensuring that learners gain the experience and certification needed to pursue a career in law enforcement.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the Metro Police and Traffic Learnership, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Grade 12 (Matric) qualification (documentary proof required)
- Must be a permanent resident of Cape Town (proof required)
- Proficient in English and at least one other official language
- Must be unemployed (students and EPWP staff are eligible)
- Be medically and physically fit to undergo strenuous training
- Must be 18 to 34 years old
- Must have a Code B driving licence (manual transmission)
- No visible tattoos when wearing a uniform
- No criminal record
Applicants must also be mentally resilient and prepared to undergo a variety of assessments, including physical fitness tests and medical examinations.
Fitness Assessments
Given the physical demands of the training, applicants will undergo a series of fitness assessments. These include:
- 2.4 km run (Males: 11 mins, Females: 13 mins)
- 1-minute push-up test (both males and females: 30 push-ups)
- 1-minute sit-up test (both males and females: 30 sit-ups)
- Dead load carry (100m with two 25kg weights)
- Tyre drag over 20m
- 20m shuttle runs (10 runs in 60 seconds)
- 2.1-meter wall clearance
- Motorcycle reach test
- Comfort swim (any stroke)
Candidates who fail to meet the requirements in any of the tests will be disqualified from further assessments.
What Will Learners Do?
Learners will undertake various duties, including maintaining law and order on Cape Town’s roads. They will be required to:
- Wear uniforms and adhere to the code of conduct
- Work shifts and in all weather conditions
- Be rotated to various locations within the City of Cape Town
- Participate in firearm and ammunition training
- Be subject to regular medical and psychological evaluations
Additionally, learners will gain valuable exposure to the inner workings of law enforcement agencies and public safety protocols.
Additional Requirements
To be considered for this learnership, candidates will also need to:
- Pass a written assessment and an interview
- Submit fingerprints for a criminal background check
- Undergo a compulsory drug test
- Complete a driver’s assessment
