    Position Overview

    The Assistant Librarian will support the library’s operations, ensuring seamless service delivery, effective technology utilization, and comprehensive user support. Reporting to the library management team, the successful candidate will focus on optimizing integrated library systems (ILS), supervising digital resources, and enhancing user experiences through training and troubleshooting.

    Key Performance Areas

    1. Maintenance and Supervision
      • Oversee the Symphony Integrated Library System (ILS).
      • Supervise internet laboratories to ensure optimal functionality.
    2. Database Monitoring
      • Track and report on the usage of accessed databases.
    3. End-User and Staff Training
      • Provide training to library staff and users to maximize system efficiency and knowledge.
    4. Troubleshooting and Liaison
      • Address technical issues promptly.
      • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to enhance library services.

    Minimum Requirements

    To qualify for the position, candidates must possess:

    • A National Diploma/Diploma in Information Technology (IT) at NQF Level 6.
    • Two years’ experience in library technologies and library information systems.

    Preferred Qualifications and Experience

    While not mandatory, preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate:

    • BTech in IT, Bachelor’s Degree in IT, or an Advanced Diploma in IT at NQF Level 7.
    • A post-graduate diploma/degree in IT or a related field at NQF Level 8.
    • Two years’ experience in software development and programming.
    • Knowledge and experience in open-source software.

    Competencies and Skills

    The ideal candidate should exhibit:

    • Expertise in configuring and upgrading the Symphony ILS.
    • Familiarity with digital institutional repositories.
    • Effective troubleshooting abilities for integrated library systems.
    • Skills in planning and executing maintenance programs for PCs and laptops.
    • Proven interpersonal and communication skills to foster collaboration.
    • Advanced computer literacy for compiling and managing data.
    • Exceptional time management and organizational capabilities.
    • Strong analytical, negotiating, and research skills.
    • Proficiency in report writing.
