Overview of the Apprenticeship Program

Key Features of the Apprenticeship Program
This AFGRI apprenticeship offers several notable benefits:
- Comprehensive Training: You will undergo a structured 3-year in-service training program designed to give you practical skills and technical knowledge. During the first 6 months, you will be on probation, allowing both parties to determine if the role is the right fit. After this probationary period, you will enter into a formal contract with AFGRI for the remainder of the training.
- Formal Qualifications: The program provides an opportunity to qualify as a Tractor or Earthmoving Mechanic. You’ll attend a Practical Training Institute and be enrolled in N-subjects at a college through distance learning. Additionally, you’ll receive product-specific training at the John Deere Training Facility in Boksburg, along with training from other suppliers.
- No Training Costs for Successful Trainees: While there are no training fees if you pass the required courses and tests, failed training must be retaken at your own cost.
- Work-Back Period: Once you qualify, you are required to work for AFGRI for the same period it took you to complete your apprenticeship. If you withdraw from the apprenticeship or leave before completing the “work-back” period, costs will be incurred based on the time and phase of withdrawal.
- Contract Duration: The apprenticeship contract lasts for 3 years, with a maximum extension of 1 year. If you have not qualified within 4 years, the contract expires.
Roles and Responsibilities
As an apprentice, you will be responsible for:
- Training to become a qualified Mechanic/Technician
- Repairing and maintaining equipment related to the agriculture and horticulture industry
- Assisting in stock control and ensuring that tools and materials are well managed
- Providing customer service support to help clients maintain their equipment
- Performing general work in the workplace and contributing to team goals
Minimum Requirements for Application

- Plus, one of the following:
