About the Agricultural Research Council Internships – GI Microbiology and Biotechnology
The ARC- Animal Production (ARC-AP) is looking for highly motivated and skilled interns to contribute to ongoing research projects at their Irene facility. This internship will allow you to develop hands-on experience in research, sample analysis, data capturing, and report writing, among other key activities.
Key Responsibilities
As an intern at the Agricultural Research Council, you will be involved in several key research activities:
- Project Contribution
You will work closely with the Project Manager to develop and execute technical project activity plans. This will include data collection, analysis, and ensuring that all research is in line with the expected project outcomes. - Sample Collection and Data Capturing
The role will require you to participate in sample collection from field sites or laboratory environments. You will be tasked with following proper data quality control protocols to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the research. - Sample Preparation and Analysis
A significant portion of your time will be spent on laboratory work. This includes culturing, DNA extraction, and performing ELISA assays following good laboratory practices (GLP). These activities are vital in generating data for the project’s success. - Purchasing and Inventory Management
You will assist in compiling and managing project purchases, ensuring that the necessary materials and equipment are available for smooth research operations. - Technical Reporting
Another key aspect of the internship is compiling detailed technical reports. You will present your findings through these reports, which will be reviewed and approved by senior staff. - Transfer of Scientific Technology
As part of your role, you will participate in the successful transfer of scientific technology. This includes preparing reports, delivering oral and poster presentations, and even writing popular articles to communicate your research to a broader audience. - Facility Maintenance and Compliance
You will be expected to maintain and utilize facilities, apparatus, and equipment effectively. Additionally, adherence to Safety, Health, and Environmental (SHE) and Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) policies and procedures is essential. - Participation in Meetings and Workshops
You will be required to attend sectional meetings, seminars, and workshops, contributing to the exchange of knowledge and professional development.
Job Requirements
To apply for this internship position, candidates must meet the following qualifications and requirements:
- Educational Requirements
- A BSc Honours degree in Microbiology, Biotechnology, Genetics, or a closely related field.
- Alternatively, a BSc/BTech degree in Microbiology, Biotechnology, Genetics, or a closely related field, along with at least 1 year of relevant experience.
- Experience and Skills
- While prior experience is not mandatory for candidates with a BSc Honours degree, applicants with a BSc/BTech and 1 year of relevant experience will be preferred.
- You should have good communication skills, both written and verbal.
- A valid driver’s license will be advantageous.
- Nationality
- Applicants must be South African citizens.
- Additional Requirements
- A certified copy of your academic record, certificates, and supporting documents must be submitted with your application.
