Program Overview

During this time, either party can withdraw without any consequences.
After successful completion of the probation period, the apprentice will be bound by a formal contract with AFGRI, marking the beginning of their technical training. The apprenticeship includes practical training, distance learning, and product-specific training to ensure well-rounded development in the field.
Key Responsibilities
As an apprentice, your duties will evolve as you progress through the program. Here’s a breakdown of the core responsibilities:
- Repair and Maintenance: Apprentices will gain hands-on experience in repairing and maintaining machinery and equipment relevant to the Tractor and Earthmoving Mechanic fields.
- Stock Control: Apprentices will be responsible for managing the inventory of parts, tools, and materials necessary for repairs and maintenance.
- Customer Service: This program includes customer service training, ensuring apprentices develop the skills to interact professionally with clients and meet their needs.
- General Workplace Tasks: Apprentices will assist with general tasks within the workplace, gaining valuable exposure to different facets of the mechanical industry.
Training and Costs
The apprenticeship includes both formal education and on-the-job training. Here’s a breakdown of the training components:
- Practical Training: Apprentices will attend a Practical Training Institute to complete different phases of their training.
- Distance Learning: In addition to practical training, apprentices will be enrolled in N2 subjects through distance learning. This will involve attending Saturday classes as required.
- Product Training: Apprentices will receive specialized training from John Deere and other suppliers, as well as AFGRI’s own experts.
Training Costs: AFGRI covers the costs of all training as long as apprentices successfully pass each course. However, if an apprentice fails a module, they will be responsible for covering the costs of retaking the module and any extra time spent.
Qualifications Required
To be eligible for the apprenticeship, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Valid Driver’s License: A valid driver’s license is essential for the role.
- Matric or N2 Subjects: Applicants should have a Matric Certificate with specific subjects or meet the N2 requirements, which include:
- Mathematics
- Engineering Science
- Diesel Trade Theory
- One additional subject, such as:
- Industrial Electronics
- Engineering/Technical Drawing
- Motor Trade Theory
Matric Consideration: If an applicant does not have the N2 qualification, AFGRI will consider Matric certificates with subjects like Mathematics, Physical Science, Technical Science, and Engineering Graphics and Design.
If applicants are missing any N2 qualifications, they may still be eligible for the program by completing the necessary N2 subjects through Further Education and Training (FET), which AFGRI will sponsor as part of the apprenticeship.
