    Internship Overview

    The Intern – Workplace Banking will be based at Absa’s Viva Tower, ABT, and will be part of a dynamic and supportive team. The primary responsibility of this role is to assist with the opening and maintenance of customer accounts, manage leads, and ensure a seamless customer lifecycle management process. The intern will report directly to the Head of Sales & Workplace Banking, working closely with the team to ensure that clients receive top-tier services and support.

    As part of this internship, candidates will gain exposure to various aspects of banking, including customer service, account management, risk control, and sales support.     Key Responsibilities

    The intern will be engaged in a diverse range of tasks and duties aimed at supporting the sales and workplace banking teams, such as:

    1. Account Opening & Maintenance (75% of time)
      • Receive and review account opening and maintenance applications from Relationship Managers.
      • Ensure compliance with Know Your Customer (KYC) regulations by vetting documentation.
      • Scan application forms and input customer details into the system.
      • Archive completed cases following Absa’s records management policy.
      • Assist with portfolio sharing, salary reporting, and manage Turnaround Time (TAT) for account processes.
    2. Customer Retention (20% of time)
      • Promote Absa Bank’s products and services to potential customers.
      • Cross-sell existing products to current clients and refer leads to Relationship Managers for closure.
      • Activate dormant accounts and encourage customers to fund their new accounts.
      • Handle customer queries and feedback, ensuring that issues are promptly addressed and resolved.
    3. Business Management (5% of time)
      • Support with general administrative tasks like stationery ordering and asset management.
      • Collaborate with the team to ensure business objectives are met effectively.
      • Assist with risk management and controls, ensuring the business operates in accordance with Absa’s policies and procedures.

    Required Skills and Experience

    This internship is suited for candidates with an interest in financial services and an eagerness to learn and grow within a reputable banking institution. The ideal candidate will possess:

    • Relationship Skills: Ability to interact with clients, build rapport, and provide excellent customer service.
    • Communication Skills: Proficiency in both English and Swahili is a must for this role, as effective communication is essential.
    • Organizational Skills: Strong planning and organizational abilities to handle multiple tasks efficiently.
    • Numeracy and Analytical Skills: Basic numeracy skills to help with data analysis and problem-solving.
    • Self-Drive and Initiative: Ability to work independently and take initiative in managing tasks.
    • Attention to Detail: Ensuring that all customer documentation is complete and compliant with the bank’s standards.

    Qualifications

    • A business university degree, preferably in finance or accounting, is essential. Additional professional qualifications will be advantageous.
    • A Certificate of Proficiency (COP) is an added advantage for candidates pursuing a career in banking.
    • Knowledge of accounting or previous experience in a financial services environment would be beneficial.
